Mamdani has signed an executive order establishing the first Mayor’s Office of LGBTQIA+ Affairs, fulfilling a major campaign promise. Civil rights attorney Taylor Brown, who previously worked for the ACLU, Lambda Legal, and the New York State Attorney General’s office, has been appointed as the office’s inaugural director. The new agency is tasked with coordinating LGBTQ+ initiatives across city departments, enforcing anti-discrimination policies, and developing legal resources to uphold the city’s sanctuary protections. Brown is a transgender woman. She is an openly Black trans woman and civil rights attorney, and with this appointment, she becomes the first transgender person in history to lead a New York City office or agency. In announcing the appointment, Mamdani emphasized the administration’s commitment to the queer community, stating that the city will refuse to deny healthcare, safety, or dignity to anyone based on their identity.
