In keeping with his commitment to maintaining New York City’s sanctuary status, Mayor Mamdani has appointed Bitta Mostofi, who worked under former President Joe Biden at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, as a special advisor, Mostofi will be in charge of auditing the NYPD, departments overseeing probation, social services and health,, and children’s services for their compliance with sanctuary laws. Mostofi told Politico the audits may result in harsher penalties for city employees who violate the sanctuary policies and put undocumented residents at risk.
