For the first time in the infancy of his mayoral term, Mamdani is at odds with a City Hall official: Comptroller Mark Levine. The two disagree on the city investing in Israel Bonds, a debt security issued by the Israeli government which averages a 5% return. The city held these bonds for nearly 50 years when former Comptroller Brad Lander ended the almost $40 million investment in 2023. Both Levine and Lander are Jewish. While Levine argued for a “globally diverse portfolio,” Mamdani said: “we don’t purchase bonds for any other sovereign nation’s debt.
