Mamdani and wife Rama Duwaji moved into Gracie Mansion earlier in the week, giving up their rent-controlled residence in Astoria, Queens. He also named Midori Valdivia as the next chair of the Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC). Valdivia, whose appointment is subject to City Council approval, is an experienced transportation policy person, having worked with the Port Authority, MTA which governs the subway, and previously as finance commissioner for TLC. Mamdani went on hunger strike in 2021 with yellow cab drivers protesting for debt relief. The iconic city workers have been put in a tight spot because of Uber and Lyft drivers.
