Mamdani announced today that detainees at Rikers Island with complex medical conditions will be transferred to a newly established therapeutic housing unit at Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan. The initial facility will serve just over 100 individuals in custody, giving them access to specialized treatments in oncology, cardiology, and neurology. This initiative represents a critical step in the mayor’s mandate to officially close the Rikers Island jail complex. The administration is also planning to open two additional units at NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull in Brooklyn and the Bronx, which will provide a combined 236 beds specifically dedicated to patients with significant mental health needs. While health officials will oversee medical care at these locations, the city’s Department of Correction will retain responsibility for security. In a public statement, Mamdani emphasized that the city is building a system that finally “delivers real care, treats people with dignity, and makes our city safer for everyone.”
