Mamdani is officially rescinding the city government’s ban on the popular video-sharing app TikTok, according to a recent report by Politico. The administration announced the reversal on Tuesday, reactivating the official @nycmayor account with a short welcome-back video to better connect with residents. Former Mayor Eric Adams originally barred local government employees and agencies from using the platform in 2023 due to data security concerns, a prohibition that remains in place for New York state employees. Acknowledging lingering cyber risks, City Hall has mandated that the app only be installed on designated city devices that are used exclusively for TikTok, with no other applications installed, and operated only by specific staff members. An internal email justified the reversal by noting that the move aims to “open up new avenues of communication” and help deliver crucial information about free services, upcoming events, and emergency situations directly to the public.
