Mamdani has announced the launch of the city’s first free, on-site child care pilot program for municipal workers. Managed by the Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS), the initiative will serve approximately 40 children between six weeks and three years old in a newly renovated $10 million facility at the David N. Dinkins Municipal Building. Applications open on April 30, 2026, and eligibility extends to all full-time city employees based at 1 Centre Street, as well as all DCAS staff regardless of their work location. Slated to open this fall, the center will operate year-round from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM on weekdays, a move designed to save working families roughly $20,000 annually while boosting employee retention and productivity. This pilot is part of the administration’s broader push for universal child care, running alongside recent announcements to expand free 2-K and 3-K seat capacity across high-demand neighborhoods later this year.
