As part of his plan to improve transportation infrastructure for lower income neighborhoods and ahead of baseball’s Opening Day, New York City Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani’s administration has broken ground on a major infrastructure project to enhance the Bx6 Select Bus Service and street safety near Yankee Stadium. Aimed at improving commutes for 25,000 daily riders, the redesign introduces a fully protected, center-running bus lane along East 161st Street and converts the existing underpass to accommodate two-way, bus-only traffic. The initiative also prioritizes pedestrian safety and accessibility by adding concrete boarding islands, expanded sidewalks, and 370 new ADA-compliant ramps. Beyond surface-level upgrades like new shelters and greenery, crews will execute extensive subterranean water main and sewer improvements. Construction is slated for completion in 2028, with a traffic mitigation plan currently in place to minimize disruptions during Yankees games.
