We are officially halfway through Mamdani’s first 100 days in office! Mamdani announced that sweeps of certain unhoused encampments are going to start again. The mayor had put the sweeps, a policy of the previous Adams administration, on hold as soon as he came into office. However, he said the revised method will be better for unhoused New Yorkers. Adams said the sweeps were part of his push to restore order to the city and they were led by the police and sanitation agency workers. Under Mamdani, the sweeps will be directed by the city’s homeless services department and involve several days of sustained engagement with people in the encampments and connecting them directly to services and available shelters.
