Mamdani has made more appointments to key city government positions. He named Dr. Alister Martin as the new head of the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. The department is one of the largest in the world, with a budget of $1.6 billion and thousands of employees. The Harvard-trained emergency physician comes to the city government at a time when the Trump administration’s cuts to Affordable Care Act subsidies and looming cuts to Medicaid are affecting the city’s millions of freelancers on the healthcare exchange and lower income New Yorkers. One of Martin’s big project this year will also be managing the influx of visitors for the World Cup amid the Trump administration’s gutting of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Dr. Michelle Morse, who was acting head, will stay on as the agency’s Chief Medical Officer.
