Today is the eleventh consecutive day when the high temperature is sub-freezing. As a result, 16 people have died due to the extreme cold thus far this year, the Mayor confirmed. The city is opening 50 new single-room shelters and has dispatched several ‘warming buses’ around town to provide heat, temporary shelter, and food. However, as Gothamist reported, the Mayor’s office appears not to have done sufficient outreach about the bus option at the Staten Island Ferry Terminal and several unhoused people, police officers on patrol, and terminal staff near where the warming buses were parked were unaware of them. Volunteers were on hand to help inform those in need of the bus.
