Jabez Chakraborty, 22, was shot by NYPD officers in Queens on January 26. The Bangladeshi New Yorker was holding a knife and in emotional distress. His family said in a statement: “We did not call the police. Instead of medical responders, the NYPD arrived and shot our son right in front of us.” Mayor Mamdani famously credited Bangladeshi aunties for being a force that got him elected, but his comment on the incident has angered the family and others in the community. In a post on X, Mamdani said: “The NYPD was responding to a 911 call where they encountered an individual wielding a knife. The NYPD is assessing the situation, and we are committed to keeping New Yorkers informed. I’m grateful to the first responders who put themselves on the line each day to keep our communities safe.” Chakraborty, meanwhile, remains on life support. During his campaign the Mayor had also proposed a new approach to policing in the city that focused on social workers and mental health professionals responding to calls alongside or instead of police.
