Mamdani said in a statement that he “commends the protestors who exercised their right to protest against” the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers believed to be staying in the Hilton hotel in Tribeca. Nearly 70 protesters were taken into custody after occupying the hotel lobby for almost an hour. New York is a sanctuary city which, in theory, means the NYPD will not cooperate with ICE officials on immigration-related matters. The mayor went on to call ICE a “rogue agency” in the same statement.
