As part of his grander affordability agenda, Mamdani turned his focus to small businesses. He signed an Executive Order directing seven city agencies and Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice Julie Su to audit the fees and fines charged to small businesses and formulate plans to cut them and reduce the bureaucracy of the thousands of regulations business owners face. The order requires the inventory to be done within the next 45 days and within the next year, the agencies must issue a report on how to provide relief for burdened small businesses. Signing the order in Cypress Hills, Brooklyn, Mamdani said: “You cannot tell the story of New York without our small businesses.”
